About Junior Department

The Pupils

In the Junior Department you will find a caring atmosphere with mutual trust, respect and friendship between staff and pupils. The philosophy of the school is outlined later under “Mission Statement”. We encourage and help each pupil to maximize their potential and to aim high as our school motto states. We feel our style of teaching is appropriate for this age group where pupils are eager to learn and take part in all school activities with a positive attitude.

The Teaching Staff

The high quality and dedication of the teaching staff, the favorable teacher-pupil ratio, excellent facilities and regular monitoring of performance, ensure that the natural spontaneity and inquisitiveness of this age group are directed purposefully.

Our transition year in Grade 7 prepares pupils for the Senior Department, and there are close links with both teachers and curriculum to facilitate a smooth transition.

We have found that high expectations of behavior and work are usually rewarded with good behavior and a positive attitude. Children need to have parameters and a structure in which to work and play. There are sanctions implemented for misdemeanors, but the school follows a policy of reward rather than punishment, and we endeavor to build up a pupil’s self-esteem and confidence so that they will take their place happily in the modern world.

The wearing of uniform is compulsory throughout the school, and the school shop in the Junior Department has all the items required.

Educational visits

The Junior pupils make many varied educational visits and expeditions, which extends their appreciation of topics, places and situations. Grade Six have the opportunity to attend a leadership course at an outward bound camp before the Prefects are appointed.

School Times

All junior children must be in their classrooms by 7.45 am when registration and the administration for the day takes place. The children finish formal lessons at 1.00 pm. Activities take place from 2.00 pm.Supervised study is organized for those pupils who have a later starting activity. Children are expected to be picked up promptly after their activity, while some will be ferried home or to various pick-up points.

Afternoon Activities

We are very happy with the response we have had to the new clubs and hobbies that were introduced this term. The new clubs such as Spelling Bee, Early Act and Public Speaking have been well received and we are grateful to the parents who are supporting their children.
